Moringa

MORINGA OLEIFERA · Matcha's older cousin. She is not competing. She is winning.

Moringa, Moringa oleifera
FORGOTTEN No. 005 · 1 OF 5
CHAPTER 1 · THE INGREDIENT

A tree of small, generous leaves.

A fast-growing tree whose slender branches carry rows of tiny paired oval leaflets. Nearly every part of it is edible. In the places it grows it is called the miracle tree, a name we will not repeat as a claim, only as a fact about what people call it.

CHAPTER 2 · THE HISTORY

Ground into a ceremonial green for four thousand years.

  • 4000 years

Long before matcha whisks reached the West, moringa leaf was dried, ground, and taken as a green tonic across South Asia and East Africa. The ceremony of the green powder is older than the ceremony most people know. Moringa is the older cousin.

CHAPTER 3 · THE FORGETTING

Overshadowed by a younger relative.

Matcha got the cafe, the merch, the moment. Moringa stayed home, kept feeding families, and let the spotlight go elsewhere. It was never forgotten where it grew. It was only forgotten by the menu.

CHAPTER 4 · THE SCIENCE

Naturally rich in iron, calcium, and antioxidants.

Moringa leaf is naturally rich in iron, calcium, vitamin A, and antioxidants, and is traditionally used as a daily green. We compare it to spinach and milk the way people have for generations, as a way of describing it, not prescribing it.
